15 decisions for the first six months back.
Ordered by when you'll actually need them.
Almost every woman I talk to prepared exhaustively for the birth and had nothing prepared for the return. You get leave paperwork and a return date, and then you're expected to figure it out on your own.

What's inside
Skip to wherever you actually are. It works whether you're back already or still on leave.
01
Before your leave starts
Decide your contact with work before you go, and get it out of your head while you still have the room to think.
02
Day 1 and Week 1
Start on a Wednesday. Archive almost all of it. Protect both edges of the day, and decide your hard stop before the day begins.
03
Month 1 and Month 3
Redefine your scope, build a steering file, and make sure your manager can describe you without you in the room.
04
The Wall
Why the earlier sections aren't enough on their own — and what's actually happening at six to twelve months back.
Who wrote this
I'm Allie.
A senior leader in big tech and a mom of three kids under five. I came back from maternity leave three times in five years, each time into a bigger role — promoted after the first, into a technical role after the second, into my boss's job after the third. Not once because I worked more hours.
This is the playbook I built across those three returns, plus a year of conversations with hundreds of women asking the same question: what am I walking back into, and can I still do this the way I used to?
